#146 The Best TV Shows of 2021
While films suffered significantly still from the pandemic, television seems to have kept the same big quantity and quality pace. So much television programming that there’s four co-hosts with particular countdowns. We have our part-timer Luke this week and annual guest host Matt that each watch television that Ralf and Oscar rarely do. Don’t forget to check the show notes for appropriate time stamps and to check our website for each Top Ten list.

#144 The Matrix Resurrections, The Power of the Dog, The Hand of God
We ring in the new year with the last show pertaining to last year. The Matrix Resurrections has a bit more cynicism, a bit more meta fun and still a lot to say in the mind-bending genre. The Power of the Dog has a lot to say about masculinity, regret, success and more in the style of a period Western set on a ranch and two particular men that come head to head. The Hand of God is a coming of age tale set in the 1980’s in Italy; possibly autobiographical in nature due to the cinematic dreams the young boy and his fledgling sexually arise.

#143 Spider-Man: No Way Home, Nightmare Alley, Tick, tick… BOOM!
Welcome to the holiday episode with the very least of holiday fanfare attached. The entertainment-hungry crowds have spoken that the latest Sony/MCU project, Spider-Man, has deserved much of the praise of what they manage to do with the character and his journey. Nightmare Alley is Guillermo Del Toro’s speech and troll-film to his audiences that expect myths and monsters. He instead attacks a time period and a type of man; the ones with a past and a certain thirst. The latest Lin-Manuel Miranda film is personal and yet a biopic/musical/adaptation that sounds murky but really, really works. A tour de force in blocking, acting and synchronicity of a time and a place and a feel.

As we near Xmas and the end of the year so does 2021 in films. We scramble to catch up on what we missed and have been wanting to see. There will be one more regular show before the Top 10 season starts. This week, we catch up on blockbusters like Encato, Pixar’s latest of a Hispanic Avengers team set to saver their home and future. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a nostalgic dagger to 80’s kids and adults with inconsistencies but a fun time. Sideways marks the end of Luke’s marathon from earlier in the year. Unfortunately, no wine was consumed during the review and it was regrettable.

#141 Eternals, Spencer, Titane
This week, we begin with the controversial Eternals. We love what it brings and what makes this Marvel film different than the rest as well as reflect on the terrible constraints and choices it does. Spencer shows us another transformation from Kristin Stewart as Princess Diana going through meltdowns and anxiety attacks upon the British royalty. A horrifying film that isn’t at all horror. Titane escapes conventional descriptors as it involves a young woman’s terrible and murderous choices that leads her to a strange situation of pretending to be a boy to escape said choices. Invigorating, disgusting and yet appealing.

#140 Last Night In Soho, The Last Duel, Finch
It’s that time again. The time when the three films we are going to review are quite different from each other. Finch is the latest post-apocalyptic entry starring Cast Away-man himself, Tom Hanks working with a robot and a dog. The Last Duel is a plot-heavy but interesting medieval tale told three times, Rashomon-style. Lastly, Last Night In Soho presents a supernatural thriller with a 1960’s setting and dollops of horror in with fashion.

#139 Dune, The French Dispatch, The Silence of the Lambs
We’ve got an eclectic set of reviews for you this week. We start with the much-anticipated Dune and spoiler-alert, it very much does not disappoint. Epic status filmmaking. Wes Anderson’s latest The French Dispatch, had the same level of intrigue and humor and quirk as ever, which brought questions about Anderson’s style becoming stale. The 30th anniversary of Silence of the Lambs is just a great excuse to revisit Johnathan Demme’s masterpiece in this Halloween season and marvel at the subtle horror, character work and pacing. Happy Halloween!!

Welcome to the long-running machine. This 3-hour special tackles the latest James Bond film, the final installment in the Daniel Craig era, and talks about the merits of a 5-part story in a normally serialized franchise. The Venom sequel didn’t work as well as we thought it would, especially its lack of holding onto the horror genre. Boyz N the Hood celebrates its 30th anniversary and we marvel at how the film remains timeless and visionary and important in the world of cinema. #137 Malignant, Pig, Ghost World
This week, we travel from the back of our heads, to the Portland culinary underworld, and to a boring town. We celebrate Ghost World’s 20th anniversary as a mark of one of our last innocent films before the epic change that 2001 brought. Pig is essentially a thought-provoking, violence-free (overall) John Wick with the Cage in the center. Malignant proves that not all 90’s tropes in horror are good but that it can still be entertaining.

We enter the latest Marvel phase in full force with Eastern realms and more magical input. In a trend of martial arts films, Shang Chi is not bad in stunts and choreography. The Candyman sequel turned out to be more needed than we anticipated as it updates to gentrification in Chicago with brutal horror. Black Hawk Down celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and we talk pretty positively at the immense cast and solid Ridley Scott directing.

Between the horror of dream-fueled impending doom, the horror of what a dead spouse leaves behind and the horror of remembering too clearly can bring, we’ve got you covered. Reminiscence is a classic-type of a noir tale filled with a dame, death and regret in a sci-fi setting. Take Shelter is about a man who gets intense dreams of the apocalypse and decides to act on it, to save his family. Happy 10th anniversary Take Shelter.

#134 The Suicide Squad, The Green Knight, Drive
This weeks’ show has a mixed bag of films. Remaking or reintroducing The Suicide Squad was a step up even if things made about as much sense as the plot did the last time around. The Green Knight gave us a beautifully constructed legend as old as time but equal parts confusion and awe. Drive, in its 10th anniversary, is a stylish and simple story of a man with no name following his ironclad code to protect the woman he loves.

Oscar has seen too many horror movies lately; from old ones new to him or new ones new to him or revisiting the ones from his misspent youth. A discussion is in order to recap some of the highs and lows of some crazy horror movies out there today. In other news, we also review M. Night’s latest, Old. It shows equal parts humanity with a once-in-a-lifetime supernatural experience. Space Jam didn’t hold up to its predecessor but it idd manage to flex the power of Warner Brothers; at least there’s that.

They make look like horror films based on their titles but they’re not; at least not all of them. This week, we jump back in the Marvel timeline with Black Widow; the superhero film that we needed but was still fun to watch. No Sudden Move has the experimental director Soderbergh doing a period piece about crime that turns out to be thematically grander. Finally, in finishing up Oscar’s marathon, we enter he world of serial killing and revenge with I Saw the Devil. No worser way to become obsessed with vengeance than this brutal tale.

#132 F9: Fast Saga, Cruella, Clockers
This time around, we scope out a lonely piece off road to imitate the energy of the heist-driven, action spectacle in the next film in the Fast and Furious Saga. Yes, a muscle-bound soap opera continues. Next, we find genuine delight in the Disney villain-as-a-hero origins story with Cruella. We find that Emma Stone’s energy, along with the great art decoration and costume designs was pretty awesome to watch. Lastly, Ralf finishes his marathon with Spike Lee’s Clockers, from 1995. A gritty street-level tale of the vicious cycle of drugs, manipulation and violence that ensorcels the young protagonist.

#130 In the Heights, The Reckoning, Martha Marcy May Marlene
Musicals are reviewed on AMP quite rarely but a lack of titles gave us the opportunity to enjoy and talk about In the Heights; a film set in New York’s Washington Heights as the colorful Latino residents deal with daily struggles and a blackout. And the future. The Reckoning proved to have interesting concepts of the supernatural during the Black Plague but fails at keeping up with a clear message. Martha Marcy May Marlene is a drama about a woman running away from a cult, trying to un-brainwash herself and dealing with the trauma she suffered with them. It’s a low-hummed but great thriller.

#129 The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Army of the Dead, Bowfinger
Double horror feature. We catch the third and unfortunately, lesser, installment of the Conjuring franchise. While an enjoyable witch-villain, it does hold a smaller candle to the previous two. Army of the Dead shows a stylish and evolving zombie-action flick that holds little in the writing but more in cool. Bowfinger is a great movie-making-movies comedy from the epic year 1999.

#128 The Woman In the Window, Those Who Wish Me Dead, Children of Men
We are doing a slightly different kind of episode this week. Each of the hosts have chosen one film to review, as opposed to Luke choosing all three. His marathon pick, Children of Men (the all-too-relatable post-apocalyptic film), was pre-recorded while Ralf and Oscar each found some streaming options. The Woman in the Window goes to interesting places to be sure, but maybe the comparison to Rear Window goes on a bit much. Those Who Wish Me Dead had high hopes but were dashed through some ‘Hollywood-izing.’

This week, we delve into some heavy shit. With Promising Young Woman, we talk about the surrealistic gender differences in terms of peril and societal dysfunction of what happens to vulnerable women when men are around. With Flight, we talk about the ethics of doing something miraculous while still being held responsible for selfish actions fueled by addiction. We begin with Barb and Star however; an all-out comedy akin to an earlier decade but with snappy writing.

#126 Mortal Kombat (2021), Madame Claude, Monster (2003)
We travel to the past; to 2003 to discuss the film that made Charlize Theron less attractive but won an Oscar for a biopic of a serial killer. We also go underground in the 1960’s with Madame Claude and her expensive prostitution ring. Lastly, we say hi to Outerworld in Mortal Kombat and discuss whether or not this B-movie is worth the watch.

#125 The 93rd Academy Awards Nominations
It’s that time of year again where we discuss the Oscars by attempting to watch as many of the (at least major) films that have been nominated for ‘the best of the best.’ We do skip a few categories where we feel-even-less-than-usually prepared to discuss but overall go through the picks, the work and possible political reasoning behind some of these nominations. We’ll be back to regular reviews on the next show, as well as our thoughts on the awards ceremony.

#124 Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal, Match Point
It’s Luke country! His choices for movie reviews this week is a diverse trio. Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a do-over on a franchise entry people disliked. Yes, while we enjoyed this new version, we do question the need for it and especially, its running time. Operation Varsity Blues is a well-deserved take down of the established elite who try to find less-than-reputable ways in getting their children into Ivy League schools. Finally, we continue Luke’s marathon with Woody Allen’s Match Point; a tense and focused story about a man’s sexual affair that leads to surprising actions.

We’re back and in marathon mode! Remember that marathon experiment we began just before the end of 2020? We decided to come back from break with three picks from each of our marathons. Panic Room is a cool thriller with a wacky camera. Tokyo Godfathers shows great levels of humanity in animated form. 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days shows the toxic government of Romania in the 1980’s through the eyes of 2 women trying to get an abortion performed under totalitarian rule.

#122 The Best Discoveries In 2020
This countdown marks our last before a month-long break. Discoveries is a ranking that discusses the best material we consumed in 2020 that didn’t come out in 2020. It’s our additional way to highlight other things, the finer things, in entertainment. It isn’t just films; it’s television, albums, authors, personal life events, video games and everything in between. These lists are always personal and give a small glimpse into our worlds.

Apply the same layout as our top ten films of the year to television. As is tradition over the last couple of years, we bring in Matt to diversify the choices of great TV shows. While plenty of movies were sidelined by the pandemic, television seemed generally unfazed; giving us plenty of sequel seasons to big hits as well as first time seasons and some great documentaries. What did you binge in 2020?

We begin with Oscar’s marathon about toxicity in films with the ringing of the New Year. The One I Love is a film about a toxic relationship meeting a strange set of supernatural circumstances. WW84 proves that while it would’ve made more money last year in theaters, it maybe doesn’t deserve it so much. Soul, the latest from Pixar, proves they can do no wrong with these wild quests of finding out the true nature of humanity and the reason we do what we do.

Merry almost Christmas! That means that the picks this week will not be reflecting the season and instead will be reviewing three intimate stories of several shapes and sizes. We bookend the show with reviews based on actual history with historical figures. Mank takes us to old Hollywood and the screenwriter that’ll write the epic Citizen Kane. The Motorcycle Diaries, as part of Ralf’s marathon, shows the life of Che Guevara before becoming the great revolutionary. Lastly, the intimate story of Sound of Metal creates the sense of desperation and trauma when the world becomes utterly quiet.

This is the beginning of Luke’s marathon; Revisiting Tastes, where he goes back to simpler times and revisits five movies that he felt strongly about, positively and negatively, and sees where they stand today. That first title is Green Street Hooligans. Fireball is Werner Herzog’s latest doc about the fascination and changes surrounding our planet and culture. Uncle Frank has Alan Ball writing and directing a purely drama film. Set in the 70’s, it has good character work and dramatic chops.

#116 Rebecca, She Dies Tomorrow, I’m Thinking of Ending Things
It’s time for introspection. Oscar’s picks this week serve up an unhealthy dose of depression and self-reflection. The least of which is a remake of 1940’s Rebecca, which takes the story of a dead woman’s memories to the farthest point. She Dies Tomorrow challenges its viewers to watch people in disarray with the thought that they’re about to die. I’m Thinking of Ending Things is just a clusterfuck of emotions relating to either a woman looking to break up with her boyfriend or a man on the cusp of death.

We are being all-inclusive this week with the streaming service providers. Out from Prime Video is the sequel to the culture shock hit, Borat, and we discuss the merits of making this sequel this year and if the comedic impact can bear the weight of the world. On the Rocks, the latest by Sofia Coppola, is brought by Apple TV+ where we get to enjoy a charming Bill Murray helping his daughter to solve a personal crisis mystery. Bad Hair, from Hulu, is the Halloween-friendly film about a slice of black life set in the 80’s, a killer weave and an MTV-type of studio.

#114 The Trial of the Chicago 7, Black Box, The Departed
This weeks’ show has taken us down memory lane, a courtroom political drama and the nonexistent line between cops and criminals. Aaron Sorkin’s latest piece of writing hasn’t missed a step as characterizations, history and memorable one-liners soar through the air. Black Box reminds one of us of Black Mirror, and while it provides a sustainable plot, it fails to land home. We’re ending our Jack Nicholson marathon with The Departed, which always provides good fun and some crazy ideas about heroes and villains.

Halloween is fast approaching and with the year being what it is, we thought it was best to continue trekking though the year with new movies that are streaming-friendly, and not horror theme… except one. Antebellum is not exactly a horror movie, but it does contain plenty of horrifying aspects and possibilities for this jaded modern world. Milan as a remake has a lot to live up to and for only one of us, was worth watching. A Few Good Men shows us the Sorkin beginnings as we enjoy the villainy and imposing figure of Jack Nicholson.

The Social Dilemma brings a grand discussion about the state of tech companies and their crafty ways to use us people as products they’re selling for ad companies. Since Oscar picked the movies this week, be sure to expect out of the ordinary and not very mainstream films. We begin with First Cow, by an indie darling director, tackling capitalism and American history through the eyes of two men. Shirley, a pseudo thriller and biopic, tries to tackle a hurricane of a figure with its titular character, only to see all fail. Lastly, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is the classic mental ward film about a not-very-good man being driven down by the structures of civilized society with comedy and dramatic flairs.

Irresistible is the Jon Stewart creation that bits American campaign and election processes as well as the hypocrisies within the two party system through the lens of a small town mayoral race. Lastly, as part of our Jack Nicholson marathon, we discuss Chinatown, the noir LA masterpiece by Roman Polanski.

This week, we discuss Prime original flicks. Beginning with 7500, a film about terrorism via hijacking of a commercial German flight through the perspective of the copilot. Unfortunately, it works mildly as a thriller and has little if anything to say about the heavy topic of its premise. Next is Radioactive; a biopic of Marie Curie as she discovers the elements that would eventually kill her. Five Easy Pieces marks the first of our latest marathon that focuses on the works of Jack Nicholson as we chronologically hit up seven films.

Next, we discuss the Polish runaway sensation and 5 Shades of Grey-in -nature, 365 Days, which proves that further attempts at this kind of movie should be extinguished. Lastly, we talk Cuban history on US soil through the perspective of loyal soldiers infiltrating traitors out to overthrow Castro.

#106 Da 5 Bloods, Nobody Knows I’m Here, Vertigo
This week, we have three awesome and personal stories to review. The first is the humanly-flawed Vietnam War centered Spike Lee joint, Da 5 Bloods, which releases during an important and tumultuous time. Nobody Knows I’m Here is a small Chilean film about a traumatized solitary person facing his past. The third is the classic Vertigo by Hitchcock where we see yet again, the clever and nuanced storytelling led by James Stewart and Kim Novak.

A bio pic of a dark time in FBI’s history and part of the constant dark things of the US government. Sober tells the story of civil rights via an actress and her experiences being monitored against her will and the law. The Vast of Night is one of the few great movies that deal with aliens. It is a story told almost in real time about two people discovering a single on the radio waves that leads down supernatural paths. Last, but not least, we take a stab at the great Lawrence of Arabia; ac classic very much revered. We discuss the sand, politics and acting. Check it out.

#104 Monster Party, Noroi: The Curse, M
It’s an all-horror film fest. This week, we focus on a certain horror streaming service; Shudder. Exclusive on there are Monster Party and Noroi: The Curse. The former is a rather disappointing indie flick with a promising premise. The latter is a mockumentary with a rocky start but compelling suspense and freaky story. As part of our ongoing marathon, we delve into the classic M, from 1931. We liked how the movie holds up nearly 90 years later in the realm of serial killer films.

#103 Bad Education, Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind, City Lights
The focus this week will be on HBO’s film series. We’ll hit two new or recent releases, first talking about corruption within the public school system in the period drama Bad Education. Then, talking about the late, great actress Natalie Wood in a documentary that follows her life and career. We conclude with the latest entry in our Sight & Sound marathon with Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights from 1931 and marvel at the physical and unique comedy stylings.

#102 Blow the Man Down, The Report, Apocalypse Now
This week, we’ll be reviewing titles exclusive to Prime Video. We will be plunged into a close-knit and violent seaside town. We’ll linger in rundown corridors and behind closed doors to find the truth and crimes of the CIA. And, we’ll let our sanity drain completely in Vietnamese jungles. Overall, a mixed bag of likes and dislikes for these movies with the highlight of the great war epic. Stay tuned for next time, when we face off with a different streaming service; HBO.

#101 Pulp Fiction, Chasing Amy, There Will Be Blood
We’ve reached triple digits! For a special one of a kind episode, we deiced to pick three films that are personally awesome. Luke went with the Kevin Smith classic Chasing Amy and we discuss its merits for such a 90’s movie. Oscar picked the quotable There Will Be Blood in order to further the dark version conversation about America and what it means to be American since the 1900’s. Ralf went with the coolest pick, Pulp Fiction and yes, we try to add something new to say about this beloved crime-comedy as with the others. Happy quarantine.

#100 Bloodshot, One Cut of the Dead, The Night of the Hunter
Happy ongoing quarantine! This week, we feature some new movies that are available for streaming. The first is Bloodshot, the latest efforts to show Vin Diesel to be an action hero but ultimately fails in memorability. One Cut of the Dead, out of Japan, is a clever horror comedy about a one-shot zombie film that shows its true colors once its over. The Night of the Hunter is the 1955 classic that tackles some extreme and psychotic notions of religion within the turmoil of a great depression. Hope you enjoy and stay safe out there.

#99 The Hunt, Contagion, Casablanca
We truck on over at AMP with regularly scheduled shows. We begin with one of the ‘rentable’ non-theatrical theatrical releases with the satirical The Hunt. It bites and it pokes lots of fun at two distinct American groups while delighting in violence. We go back to 2011 with Contagion; an amazing film that relates so closely to the world landscape of today with Corona. Contagion is our take and acknowledgement of COVID-19. Going even farther back in history, we discuss the amazing storytelling of Casablanca as part of our current marathon of the best films of all time.

#98 The Invisible Man, Horse Girl, The Third Man
We’re back in full force with a regular show! We first bring you a remake from the great classic, The Invisible Man. This time, with a twist, the story revolves around the victim trying to suss out the tech-powered maniac and heightens the horror with great build up. Horse Girl is one of the latest Netflix flicks, delivering some good mystery with a great performance by Allison Brie but felt mixed with the plot and seeming meanderings. We begin our big marathon that correlates with the Sight & Sound best films of all time with The Third Man. A great mystery told simply and without fat or qualms as to where the story goes.
