#114 The Trial of the Chicago 7, Black Box, The Departed
This weeks’ show has taken us down memory lane, a courtroom political drama and the nonexistent line between cops and criminals. Aaron Sorkin’s latest piece of writing hasn’t missed a step as characterizations, history and memorable one-liners soar through the air. Black Box reminds one of us of Black Mirror, and while it provides a sustainable plot, it fails to land home. We’re ending our Jack Nicholson marathon with The Departed, which always provides good fun and some crazy ideas about heroes and villains.

#113 Antebellum, Mulan, A Few Good Men
Halloween is fast approaching and with the year being what it is, we thought it was best to continue trekking though the year with new movies that are streaming-friendly, and not horror theme… except one. Antebellum is not exactly a horror movie, but it does contain plenty of horrifying aspects and possibilities for this jaded modern world. Milan as a remake has a lot to live up to and for only one of us, was worth watching. A Few Good Men shows us the Sorkin beginnings as we enjoy the villainy and imposing figure of Jack Nicholson.

#112 #Alive, The Social Dilemma, Batman
Ralf’s choices this week has brought us to Netflix this week. Beginning with a solid zombie-apocalypse entry in #Alive, we talk about the detailed differences and the use of technology that modern zombie flicks do not emphasize. The Social Dilemma brings a grand discussion about the state of tech companies and their crafty ways to use us people as products they’re selling for ad companies. Last but not least, we watch the ver beloved Batman, from Tim Burton. The real question becomes; can Luke, Oscar and Ralf separate a nostalgia favorite from a critical eye.

We’ve got a couple of comedies for you this week. Coming straight from Prime Video, shilled by Luke, we talk about four delinquents being hunted in the wilderness in Get Duked! We also time travel once again with Bill &Ted Face the Music and wonder if the movie has too much plot or not. Lastly, the ongoing Jack Nicholson marathon has brought us to The Shining, and we only wish we had more time to devote to the Stanley Kubrick horror masterpiece.

#110 First Cow, Shirley, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Since Oscar picked the movies this week, be sure to expect out of the ordinary and not very mainstream films. We begin with First Cow, by an indie darling director, tackling capitalism and American history through the eyes of two men. Shirley, a pseudo thriller and biopic, tries to tackle a hurricane of a figure with its titular character, only to see all fail. Lastly, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is the classic mental ward film about a not-very-good man being driven down by the structures of civilized society with comedy and dramatic flairs.

We’re dipping into films only or mainly available on VOD to rent or to buy. We discuss the latest by Judd Apatow, King of Staten Island, which is a story about a man in arrested development and emotional issues finally learns something about moving on. Irresistible is the Jon Stewart creation that bits American campaign and election processes as well as the hypocrisies within the two party system through the lens of a small town mayoral race. Lastly, as part of our Jack Nicholson marathon, we discuss Chinatown, the noir LA masterpiece by Roman Polanski.

This week, we discuss Prime original flicks. Beginning with 7500, a film about terrorism via hijacking of a commercial German flight through the perspective of the copilot. Unfortunately, it works mildly as a thriller and has little if anything to say about the heavy topic of its premise. Next is Radioactive; a biopic of Marie Curie as she discovers the elements that would eventually kill her. Five Easy Pieces marks the first of our latest marathon that focuses on the works of Jack Nicholson as we chronologically hit up seven films.

Next, we discuss the Polish runaway sensation and 5 Shades of Grey-in -nature, 365 Days, which proves that further attempts at this kind of movie should be extinguished. This week, we have three awesome and personal stories to review. The first is the humanly-flawed Vietnam War centered Spike Lee joint, Da 5 Bloods, which releases during an important and tumultuous time. Nobody Knows I’m Here is a small Chilean film about a traumatized solitary person facing his past. The third is the classic Vertigo by Hitchcock where we see yet again, the clever and nuanced storytelling led by James Stewart and Kim Novak.

A bio pic of a dark time in FBI’s history and part of the constant dark things of the US government. Sober tells the story of civil rights via an actress and her experiences being monitored against her will and the law. The Vast of Night is one of the few great movies that deal with aliens. It is a story told almost in real time about two people discovering a single on the radio waves that leads down supernatural paths. Last, but not least, we take a stab at the great Lawrence of Arabia; ac classic very much revered. We discuss the sand, politics and acting. Check it out.

It’s an all-horror film fest. This week, we focus on a certain horror streaming service; Shudder. Exclusive on there are Monster Party and Noroi: The Curse. The former is a rather disappointing indie flick with a promising premise. The latter is a mockumentary with a rocky start but compelling suspense and freaky story. As part of our ongoing marathon, we delve into the classic M, from 1931. We liked how the movie holds up nearly 90 years later in the realm of serial killer films.

We’ve reached triple digits! For a special one of a kind episode, we deiced to pick three films that are personally awesome. Luke went with the Kevin Smith classic Chasing Amy and we discuss its merits for such a 90’s movie. Oscar picked the quotable There Will Be Blood in order to further the dark version conversation about America and what it means to be American since the 1900’s. Ralf went with the coolest pick, Pulp Fiction and yes, we try to add something new to say about this beloved crime-comedy as with the others. Happy quarantine.

Happy ongoing quarantine! This week, we feature some new movies that are available for streaming. The first is Bloodshot, the latest efforts to show Vin Diesel to be an action hero but ultimately fails in memorability. One Cut of the Dead, out of Japan, is a clever horror comedy about a one-shot zombie film that shows its true colors once its over. The Night of the Hunter is the 1955 classic that tackles some extreme and psychotic notions of religion within the turmoil of a great depression. Hope you enjoy and stay safe out there.

We truck on over at AMP with regularly scheduled shows. We begin with one of the ‘rentable’ non-theatrical theatrical releases with the satirical The Hunt. It bites and it pokes lots of fun at two distinct American groups while delighting in violence. We go back to 2011 with Contagion; an amazing film that relates so closely to the world landscape of today with Corona. Contagion is our take and acknowledgement of COVID-19. Going even farther back in history, we discuss the amazing storytelling of Casablanca as part of our current marathon of the best films of all time.

We’re back in full force with a regular show! We first bring you a remake from the great classic, The Invisible Man. This time, with a twist, the story revolves around the victim trying to suss out the tech-powered maniac and heightens the horror with great build up. Horse Girl is one of the latest Netflix flicks, delivering some good mystery with a great performance by Allison Brie but felt mixed with the plot and seeming meanderings. We begin our big marathon that correlates with the Sight & Sound best films of all time with The Third Man. A great mystery told simply and without fat or qualms as to where the story goes.

#94 The Best TV Shows of 2019
If you think movies in 2019 were great, then TV was amazing. We bring on special annual guest Matt to discuss our best TV shows with some surprising overlap. Netflix and HBO are the reigning kings when it comes to content but we don’t miss out on the creativity coming from Japanese animation. 2019 also marked the ending of several TV goliath and critical darlings.

Welcome to the end of a decade in movies. As the inevitable best-films-of-the-decade show comes next month, we talk about 2019 and all its glory. The year was an amazing year for movies of all shapes and colors and sizes. Many trends are seen in several titles as well as certain actors standing out above the crowd of really great performances. Blockbuster movies took a hit, especially in the summer, but the high-water mark that is Marvel’s 20-year odyssey worked out great. Tell us your best films and discuss out lists.

#B34 Fast & Furious Present: Hobbes and Shaw
Lets see how much torque is required for an action movie franchise to spin off two crazy strong characters and make us love it. The Rock and Statham team up oxymoronically to fight the black Superman (Idris Elba) with even less espionage-intrigue than previous Fast & Furious entries but compensates with crazier action sequences involving skyscrapers and cliff edges. The movie is a blast.

It took a while but Marvel’s first super heroine is here! While Captain Marvel and the lady underneath the suit Brie Larson are awesome in the film some of us felt underwhelmed by the end. The 90’s references and music were overdone but a lovely way to introduce a Superman-like hero with conflict.

What does a more better-made and heavier on action version of Red Sparrow look like? It’s Anna. Femme Fatale to the max in this modern version of the female spy taking on the men and power that take advantage. A twisty and fun action flick that pulls two sides of power back and forth.

#91 Knives Out, The Irishman, The Illusionist vs The Prestige
A nice set this week. Knives Out brings a modern whodunit story with heavy classic homages and influences. A great project after Rian’s previous Star Wars entry. Likewise, the great Scorsese’s follow up to his mob and crime films, The Irishman, is a well-tendered movie that spans decades and marks a glorious and awful time in our nation’s history. Lastly, The Illusionist and The Prestige get their due with our newest Twin Film marathon entry; comparing magician’s and their motivations for continuing their work.

The final stretch of ‘regular’ episodes are a-comin.’ We begin with two unique visionaries in their thrilling/atmospheric/horror fields. One takes the Stephen King sequel novel to The Shining and makes an entertaining shine-filled, tense tale of soul sucking vampires and a certain hotel. The other takes a look into a certain time period and type of superstition associated best with the sea and the aura and allure of certain lighthouse and its keepers. Finally, we begin a short but going to be ongoing marathon called Twin Films; pitting two movies closely released to each other and close in plot. Find out who we think is the winner.

#88 Haunt, Zombieland: Double Tap, High Life
Before double tapping that zombie, we have a double bill of Halloween flicks for the season! Zombieland: Double Tap doesn’t make its predecessor good or bad but doesn’t provide any actual reasons to exist other than fun kills and quips galore. Haunt (on Shudder) has the bones of a paint-by-numbers horror flick where a group of youths gets killed off one by one in a haunted house, but manages to have fun gore and good background character work on the main heroine. High Life, while not a horror, certainly provides a ghastly situation. It’s about a group of convicts set into space to improve science and with little to no hope of surviving physically or traumatically.

#87 Joker, El Camino, Midsommar
Yay for short titles. This week, we uncover strange locales; Swedish commune, Albuquerque, and Gotham (70’s New York). Joker takes a page from dark tales like The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver but perhaps misses the point? Either way, an interesting film with an amazing central performance. El Camino brings the Breaking Bad crew back to tell the tale of Jesse Pinkman’s escape from the law and other bad elements to a life he sorely deserved. Midsummer wraps a toxic relationship in a box filled with trauma that rests atop a pagan cult.

#86 Ad Astra, Rambo: Last Blood, American Factory
An unlikely trio of flicks to be sure. American Factory is an even-handed portrayal of Chinese and American cultures clashing over work ethics and company behavior. Rambo: Last Blood has a script with many holes and inconsistencies but the action serves the brutality and machismo that is to be expected and overall fun. Ad Astra lends an intimate viewpoint of a son searching for the meaning of his life and his father to Neptune. Beautiful, energetic and at times, surreal.

#85 It Chapter 2, The Amazing Johnathan Documentary, Hail Satan?
There’s a change up from the roster. Instead of the horror flick Hagazussa, we decided to talk about Hulu’s new hit documentary about the Amazing Johnathan. A story that unfolds into a wholly different story. Hail Satan talks about the modern movement of the Satanic Temple and its creed to actually separate church and state while encouraging religious pluralism. It the sequel is unfortunately a bombastic shadow of its predecessor with great casting that doesn’t save it at the end.

#84 Ready Or Not, Where’d You Go Bernadette, The Last Black Man In San Francisco
This weeks’ roster of flicks are met with mixed feelings by both Ralf and Oscar. The Last Black Man In San Francisco is being received really well by critics and those who are nostalgic for childhood homes but not us. Bernadette has some good performances and charm but fails to justify the elongated first act and redemption at the end. Ready Or Not is a fun ride that doesn’t go beyond its premise and trailer when it could’ve easily provided some layers to go along with the mayhem.

#83 The Kitchen, Fast Color, The Souvenir
This week, we delve into three different tales told and lead by women. The Kitchen is a comic book adaptation about three women taking charge of mob activity in NY in the 70’s. Good pacing but some third act rushing. Fast Color is a low-key indie superhero movie about a girl on the run and searching for a way to retrieve her gifts. The Souvenir is a toxic person that a young female filmmaker falls for in her youth in the 80’s.

This week has the heavy, the light and the horrid. The heavy with substance and history is The Rolling Thunder Revue, which shows Bob Dylan and his group in the 70’s knocking the house and minds down. The light is the music biopic of Motley Crue; their crazy ups and highs and drug-fueled lows. The horrid is the unnecessary, photo-realistic remake of The Lion King.

#80 Spider-Man: Far From Home, Yesterday, Mulholland Drive
A superhero, romantic and mystery box movie walk into a bar. One is about a friendly neighbor spider who is mourning and may prefer a more normal life. Another shows a world without The Beatles but one man who rises through the charts with hit after hit. The third shows the true nature of the city of dreams and the toxicity of people and their desires. Which one orders the whiskey sour?

#B29 Glass
A highly anticipated film to say the least. We’re all fans of 2000’s Unbreakable and the ending scene of Split told us that M. Night wasn’t done with this world. We;re happy to say that Glass has a lot to say about our current superhero state, about the essence of sequels and opens up a brand new can of worms. Great performances form Jackson and company. Lets see where we go from here.

#79 Toy Story 4, The Dead Don’t Die, Pleasantville
A mixed bag for all ages and spanning some generations. Bringing the emotional saga that is Toy Story 4, which is geared for the new parents that grew up with the first installment. Pleasantville is a blast of a blast from the past; reliving a hopeful and fictional time of America in the 1950’s with a splash of color. The Dead Don’t Die shows a meta rendition go the zombie apocalypse through the many types of American eyes living today.

#78 Rocketman, Her Smell, Chungking Express
Strange human connections, fame both fictional and based on real life and extremes in human complexity shape this weeks’ show. Chungking Express is the 4th film of our Cities/Towns marathon that connects two couples in unconventional ways in Honk Kong. Her Smell shows the mania of a lead punk singer and the trail of debris she leaves in her wake. Rocketman proves that musical biopics have yet to reach new depths but can hold a candle for Elton John fans enough.

#B28 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (MAY)
Animation used very very well. Spider-Man; the superhero most used on TV and film returns with a self aware attitude of its predecessors and reinvigorates the mythology of Peter Parker as well as animation as a medium with a great story, inspired casting and an overall cool demeanor. Rarely has a mixing of animation styles worked so well as it did here and let’s not forget the success of using 3D to the movie’s advantage when it came to the action sequences and dramatic beats.

#77 John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum, Replicas, Uncle Buck
We have a Keanu Reeves double feature review! One is about a scientist that clones his tragically dead family and the other is about an ex-assassin that murders more poor souls than any two slasher franchises. As part of our Cities and Towns marathon, we delve into Uncle Buck; a classic dreamed featuring John Candy working as substitute parent for his nieces and nephew.

#76 Under the Silver Lake, Perfectos Desconocidos, Enter the Void
The three films we cover this week requires an unblinking eye. Under the Silver Lake is a throwback to Hitchcokian noir and a strange LA puzzle-box flick featuring disenchanted people. Perfectos Desconocidos (Perfect Strangers) shows just how bad a dinner party amongst best friends can get when all cell phone alerts, calls and texts are read in front of everybody. Enter the Void, part of our marathon, shows the unique and trippy perspective of taking drugs and afterlife when a young man dies suddenly and glimpses his past and the future laid out for his sister. A movie meant to be experienced not just watched.
